Editorial Policy

1. Our editorial mission

CoolCompair exists to help readers make a better-informed choice when they buy a fan or air conditioner — not to push the highest-margin product, the most-stocked product, or the one that pays the largest commission. Every editorial decision on this site is taken with that mission in mind, and the rules below describe exactly how we keep that promise.

2. How we choose which products to cover

Our catalogue is curated by hand. We start with the products that real UK, US, AU, EU and UAE shoppers are buying — derived from public retailer best-seller lists, Amazon's category rankings, and direct manufacturer announcements — and add anything that materially advances the category (a notably quieter motor, a genuinely improved energy rating, a meaningful price drop on a previous-generation flagship).

We do not accept paid inclusion. A manufacturer cannot pay to have a product added to our catalogue, and an importer cannot pay to remove a rival from a comparison.

3. How we score products

Every product receives a single 0–10 editor's score, derived from a transparent rubric. The rubric and weightings are documented on our How We Test page; in short, the inputs are:

• Cooling output / airflow: measured by published BTU rating (for ACs) or claimed CFM / m³/h (for fans), normalised against the room size the product is sold for.
• Energy efficiency: EU/UK energy label class (A+++ → G) for ACs; CADR-per-watt and standby draw where published for fans.
• Noise: manufacturer-published dB at the lowest and highest fan speeds, with a penalty for any product whose minimum speed exceeds 50 dB.
• Build & longevity signals: warranty length, parts availability, brand-level reliability (we draw on Which?, Consumer Reports, and aggregated Amazon-rating data; never on a single influencer review).
• Value: cooling output and feature set per pound / dollar / euro at the current best retailer price, weighted against the category's median.

The rubric is the same regardless of which retailer carries the product or which network pays the commission. We re-score whenever a product's spec sheet, energy rating, or median price changes materially.

4. The role of buyer ratings

We surface the aggregated Amazon star rating and total review count for each product because it is one of the few signals that scales to thousands of real households. We do not invent quotes, synthesise testimonials, or paraphrase individual reviews. The short "What buyers say" paragraph on product pages summarises the aggregate rating and key specs — nothing more. It is updated regularly and timestamped.

5. Automation and tooling

We use automation to keep prices current, check retailer stock, and flag dead links. Short factual summaries (the "What buyers say" paragraph and product specifications) are generated from structured data and reviewed for accuracy. Long-form guides, comparisons, and buying advice are written and fact-checked by our editorial team.

6. Conflict of interest

Editors at CoolCompair cannot accept gifts, payment, free product retention, or hospitality from manufacturers in exchange for coverage. Where a review unit is supplied for testing, it is either returned within 30 days or its market value is donated to charity, and the review carries a "Review unit supplied by manufacturer" label. We separate editorial and commercial decisions: the team deciding which retailer to link to never decides which product to recommend, and vice-versa.

7. Corrections and updates

If we get something wrong, we will correct it openly. Material corrections are logged at the bottom of the affected page with a timestamp and a brief description of what changed. If a price shown on our site is materially out of date and the retailer's actual price is higher, we will update the listing within one trading day of being notified. Email hello@coolcompair.com with the URL and we will action it.

8. Right of reply

A manufacturer who believes our review of their product contains a factual inaccuracy can submit a right-of-reply request to hello@coolcompair.com. We will review the evidence and, where the inaccuracy is borne out, update the page and post a correction note. We do not commit to changing editorial conclusions on the basis of a manufacturer's preference alone.

9. Sponsorship and gifted content

See our Affiliate Disclosure for the full list of programmes we participate in. Where a piece of content is sponsored, paid for, or based on a free-of-charge review unit, it is labelled clearly: "Sponsored", "Paid partnership", or "Review unit supplied by manufacturer". Sponsorship never buys a favourable verdict.

10. Who writes for us

Bylines on this site are real, named editors who are accountable for the accuracy of what they publish. We do not use synthetic personas, ghost-written affiliate content, or anonymous "Editorial team" bylines. If a piece is collaboratively written, every contributor is named.

11. Compliance with codes of practice

CoolCompair aims to comply with: the UK Advertising Standards Authority CAP Code; the US Federal Trade Commission's Endorsement Guides (16 CFR Part 255); the EU Unfair Commercial Practices Directive (2005/29/EC); the Australian ACCC guidance on testimonials and endorsements; and South Africa's Consumer Protection Act. We treat compliance as a floor, not a ceiling.
